Design Plus Gallery presents a Set of Four Cherner Armchairs by Cherner Chair Company. Designed by Norman Cherner in 1958. These style of chair’s popularity had soared when they appeared in Norman Rockwell’s 1961 painting “The Artist at Work” as it was on the cover of the Saturday Evening Post. Originally created by Norman Cherner and manufactured for Plycraft, however the company stole his design telling Cherner that the design had been scrapped while continuing to produce it as their own design. Cherner had no choice but to sue the company over the use of his designs, which they settled with an agreement to pay Cherner royalties. By the early 1970s the line of chairs went out of production allowing the formation of Cherner Chair Company through Norman’s sons. They were successfully able to revive the design and produce them as their father originally intended. Constructed of laminated plywood of graduating thicknesses, from 5 ply at the perimeter edge of the seat to 15 ply at the slender waist, the design possesses exceptional structural strength and dramatic sculptural beauty. The arm is a single solid piece of bent beech with a walnut stain. The seats are white vinyl. All are in good condition, visible minor wear from usage + age.. Brand label is under the seat. Made in US.
