About the Artist:
Vu Thu Hien was born in 1970 in Bat Trang, Vietnam, and grew up around artists and art as her father was the master artist Vu Duy Nghia (1935-2022) and her parents both worked at the Hanoi Academy of Industrial Fine Arts. She graduated from the facility in 1992 with exposure to classical Western art combined with Vietnamese artistic aesthetics, and since then her work has become appreciated around the globe for its rich contextualization of multiculturalism. Using both rice paper and Dzo paper made from the bark of the mulberry tree she uses the unique textures to craft watercolors that are dreamlike, delicate, and haunting in their clarity and subject matter. Many of her subjects are traditionally clothed figures navigating a modern world, surrounded by Buddhist symbolism and poetry. Her first solo exhibition outside Vietnam was in Italy in 2002, with yearly showcases in Israel, England, France, and America ever since. Currently she is represented by Thang Long Art Gallery, which has locations in Hanoi and London, and frequently showcases her work on the east coast of Florida, where she also gives regular lectures on the history and style of Vietnamese art.
