The painting is made with oil and gold leaf on canvas and shows a woman in the foreground with a naked admiring suiter beside her in an intimate side embrace. The artist is a formidable and celebrated folk artist in the Russian region of Gorodets. Gorodets painting sprang from carved distaffs that were manufactured in villages nearby Gorodets town in the Nizhni Novgorod Region. Initially local craftsmen used the incrustation technique to ornament the distaffs. Gorodets artists traditionally paint genre scenes (merrymaking, tea drinking, riding the famous Gorodets horse), such as in Dance. The painting is encased in a thick golden frame and comes with a printout of its Certificate of Authorization.
