The original is an oil on canvas painting that was a popular success at the Salon of 1880 and has been widely reproduced as shown here. The painting is often interpreted as an illustration of a scene from the ancient Greek novel Daphnis and Chloe or the French novel Paul et Virginie, both of which feature young lovers running to take shelter from a storm. The stormy background and the couple’s disheveled clothing create a sense of dramatic movement and emotion. Condition is good; varnish has started to yellow from age.
