Design Plus Gallery presents “Waterfront” an original oil painting by Jean Kalisch (San Francisco 20th Century). A modernist stylized seascape in shades of green and blue, oil on canvas, signed lower left. The piece is linen matted and framed in dark gray stained wood.

About Artist:
“Kalisch was born in Japan in the 1912. As a child, she was give instruction in Chinese calligraphy. In the 1950s, she moved to California with her husband, Jules. In California, she showed in some of the leading galleries of the mid 20th century. She has exhibited at the San Francisco Museum, the Crocker Museum in Sacramento, Rosicrucian Museum in San Jose, Richmond Art Center and De Young Museum of San Francisco.
Known as a Cubist and Colorist, Kalisch’s career as an artist began in the 1950s. She received many awards during her lifetime, including Purchase Awards at the California State Fair in 1957 and the San Francisco Art Festival in 1964. Critics have called her “a representationalist with a vivid imagination,” and characterized her work as “an ingenious combination of Cubism and Impressionism.”
