Design Plus Gallery presents a Crystalline Glazed Vase by John Mankameyer, with his Signature Manka on the base. Fascinating hand-thrown and hand-glazed vase in tones of light blue and green created by independent artist John Mankameyer. The play of light is interesting when you turn the surface slightly as the radiating lines inside the crystals seem to shift position and glow. It is signed “Manka”. Note the unusual color contrast between crystals and ground color that John developed experimentally. These randomly sized and randomly located crystals make each piece unique. He collected agates to use in making jewelry, and gradually this became his full-time business. Later he moved into ceramics, developing a national reputation for his stunning crystalline glazes. Numerous museums have acquired his work, including the Minneapolis Institute of Arts and the Oakland Museum. John spearheaded the revival of interest in crystalline glazes during the late 1970s. One of his accomplishments was a crystalline glaze that mimicked the appearance of agates, and in fact the glaze here has features similar to fortification agates such as Fairburn agates and Laguna agates. Vase is in good condition with wear that is consistent with its age + use.
