Hobart Brown “The Warrior” Wire Sculpture

Design Plus Gallery presents “The Warrior” an intricate wire sculpture by Hobart Brown, 1964. This forceful figure, displays the simple steel and brass materials and craft in an intricate form. Little surface wear; condition is good.

“Hobart Brown was the founder of the annual race of human-powered sculptures, which has grown to cover more than 40 miles in three days, from Arcata to Ferndale via water, sand, freeway and city streets.

Copper, steel and brass molded itself into fantastical creations whenever Brown slipped on his dark glasses, hat and lit his welding torch. He was an acclaimed artist since his earliest days out of the Army, with shows in Palm Springs, Los Angeles and other cities.

His friends and neighbors helped by buying sculptures early on, but as the years past, his collectors’ list grew to include buyers such as the Smithsonian Institution, the Getty Museum, the Ronald Reagan Library and Museum, numerous politicians and celebrities. Also on that list are a number of wealthy people in western Australia and Asia, who discovered his work in the last decade of his life while he was artist-in-residence at two western Australian wineries.”
