About the Artist: Coraly Hanson
“I’ve been painting seriously in oil since the year 2000, but I’ve loved to draw from my early childhood. I took a few drawing classes in high school and college and first started painting when I lived at Lake Tahoe in the early 1970’s. (My dear husband Lee bought me my first set of paints for a wedding present!) At Lake Tahoe I sold my work in several different art shows, and even won a few awards. After we moved back to Santa Cruz I didn’t paint over the next 30 years because I was raising my family and teaching Bible Study Fellowship full time.

Some of my most thrilling “art adventures” were painting in the Loire Valley in France, Banff National Park, the East coast of Canada with Kevin MacPherson of Plein Air Masters. Kevin also invited me to paint in New Zealand where I was filmed for his PBS documentary called “Passports and Palettes”. I was thrilled with my second painting trip to the Grand Tetons in Wyoming and studying near by with Scott Christiansen in his advanced painting class. I usually try to paint for several weeks each year in Yosemite National Park. Painting for a month through the Canadian Rockies in 2014 and 2018, and Fall of 2015 in Maine and Acadia National Park were both great experiences, and also the Grand Canyon, the Grand Tetons and Glacier National Park in 2016. I also had the delight to paint through England, including The Cotswolds and the Lake District in 2017.

I’ve not only studied with the master impressionist painter Kevin MacPherson several years in locations all around the world, but also with Scott Christiansen, Matt Smith, Laurie Kersey, Brian Blood, C. W. Mundy, Ronaldo Macedo, John Cosby, Ray Roberts, Calvin Liang, Randall Sexton, Bill Cramer, John Burton, Jesse Powell, and Hedi Moran, Kathy Anderson and Dick Heichberger from the Scottsdale Artist School.

I paint primarily on location, since there is no substitute for being 100% “present” on the scene and taking your inspiration from the colors, atmosphere, light, sounds, and personal experiences from nature. I have a studio/gallery at my home in Santa Cruz, where I do larger studio paintings from original plein air studies. I also take commissions using my smaller pieces for reference.

I am currently a member of Oil Painters of America, American Impressionist Society, California Art Club as a painting/patron member, American Academy of Women Artists as an artist member, Plein Air Painters of Hawaii, Monterey Bay Plein Air Painters Association as a signature member, and Santa Cruz Oil Painters. I am currently represented by the James Rieser Fine Art Gallery in Carmel, the Argosy Gallery in Bar Harbor Maine, and also have 30 paintings showing exclusively in the beautifully restored West Cliff Inn Bed and Breakfast in Santa Cruz. I also show 200+ paintings at my studio gallery, 22 Hollins Drive, Santa Cruz shown by appointment and also during the Santa Cruz Open Studios each October. (I was formerly represented in the James Harold Gallery in Lake Tahoe for seven years, and the Mountainsong Gallery in Carmel for three years before both had to close. I also had a two woman show at Carmel Visual Arts., and a one woman show in Bar Harbor Maine at the Argosy Gallery in July 2019.)”
