NA LAWAIA
(The Fishermen)
“Small airplanes circle the bays and lagoons of Maui during the Summer and Fall searching out the schools of fish that will justify commercial effort. But when the fish are located, the work is turned over to fishermen whose boats can hold little more than their nets. This scene unfolded in front of my Kahana home in September of 1995, as the fishermen lauched their boat from an unofficial ramp that is maintained there. Actually, the conditions were not quite right and it took three days and two nights, and several starts, before the catch was secure. During this time the fishermen, and their families, who were from the South side of Maui, were made welcome by our Hawaiian neighbors. A good catch is said to be worth $50,000, or more, but those who actually boat the fish more than earn their share. The quarry are akule, a mackerel like fish. There is little fishing during the winter due to fish migration.” Jeanne B. Denton-Nelson Artist November22, 1998
