Created 1965, with 52 impressions, it is printed on Japan paper and signed in lower right under the artists’ chop. The Hebrew letters translate to: “Oh that my head were waters, and mine eyes a fountain of tears, that I might weep day and night for the slain of the daughter of my people!” Jeremiah 9:1. Double framed, once in ivory linen and again in rubbed black lacquer. Light surface wear; vintage condition is consistent with age and use.

Ben Shahn (1898-1959) printmaker, painter, muralist, was born in Rovno, Lithuania, settling in Brooklyn in 1908. Apprenticed to a lithographer after finishing middle school at 14, he spent long hours grinding lettering stones “thousands and thousands of letters”. Often the subject of a drawing would become a print or painting. Shahn believe din hard work and craftsmanship, qualities seen throughout his career. Light surface wear; vintage condition is consistent with age and use.
