Design Plus Gallery presents the Koro Satsuma Japanese Incense Holder, of the Meiji Style Circa 1940. Origin Japan It has traditional images painted on its front and back. The purpose of this ceramic is to burn incense. Sometimes known as “Satsuma porcelain” is a type of porcelain from Japan. The style originated in the 6th century, during the Azuchi-Momoyama period, and is still produced today. Although the term can be used to describe a wide variety of types of pottery, the best-known type of Satsuma porcelain is an ivory color, with soft glazes, elaborate polychrome motifs, and gold decorations. The industry was developed in Satsuma by the Shimazu family of the Satsuma domain in southern Kyushu, who brought expert potters from Korea to that old province after the Japanese invasion of Korea. This style ceramic became known in Europe after their inclusion to an international exhibition in Paris in 1867. Does not come with lid. The holder does have wear but is considered to be in good condition with wear that is consistent with regular usage.
